Half Bad – Sally Green ( Review )

Synopsis – Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late. But how can Nathan find his father when there is no one safe to trust, not even family, not even the girl he loves?

** spoiler alert **

This is not just about magic and how cool it is! This is about segregation, child abuse, cruelty, discrimination and much more. An absolute must read!

Nathan is a half black/half white whet. Until the age of 18, witches are called whets. At 18 a relative must give a whet their blood to drink and three gifts, so that they can become a witch and have a gift. Nathan’s mother died and his father is the most feared black witch of all time named Markus.

The council of witches within England tries to segregate black witches from white, which proved to be problematic as Nathan lives with his grandmother and half siblings who are all white witches. Some in family care for him such as his grandmother, but one of his sisters has always hated him and treated him badly. He is later taken away by the council and held by Celia, who keeps him in a cage, yet takes care of Nathan in the most simplistic way. He is fed, and trained to make sure he is healthy, as the council had planned to use him to find his father.

He escapes, in search of his father to give him his gifts and turn him into a witch, however he meets many people along the way. This book is amazing, and I seriously do recommend it. It truly shows how some can be cruel and some can be kind all due to what they have been told from a young age ( black witches are evil). Annalise is a complicated character, and the slight insta-love was annoying however I believe that she is not all as good as she seems. Her fear of standing up for Nathan was so annoying, and I feel like she will betray him at some point.
